Maple Backed Ipe
« on: August 31, 2013, 03:24:02 am »
A few months ago I was given a glued up pyramid bow by adb while paying him a visit.  Something seemed a little fishy so I was wondering if there was some sort of bug in it.  I looked it over but all I noticed was that someone got a little greedy with the belt sander right out of the fades  >:D  This is the first time I've tillered out an ipe bow, so I wasn't quite sure if there would be enough wood there to get a decent weight bow, after taking some thickness off of the remainder of the limbs to prevent a hinge.  But I just took it easy and worked on getting a nice bend right off the bat, and was able to coax a hunting weight bow from it.  I've put about 100 arrows through it since finishing it up, and am happy enough with it that I think it is going to come hunting with me next week.  If I'm lucky I might have a few more pictures to share when I get back!

Some stats - 66" between the knocks, 47 lbs @ 28", gator-embossed veg-tanned cowhide for the grip, with hair-on calf hide for the strike plate.  The string is a 10 strand fast flight with ugly rubber string silencers on it.

Thanks for looking!

Note: This is not a short draw, it's just a 33" arrow  ;)

Wow, now that is one sexy bow. The handle is super professionally done, looks very good. The tiller is picture perfect. Nice!
