follow and help me along the way. (DYE JOB DONE)
« on: August 29, 2013, 01:29:28 pm »
I got this stave in a trade with Pearly, osage orange 69" long and around 2" wide. Im confident ill get a great bow out of this but it doesnt hurt to have all you experts help me out along the way. the stave has some twist to it, mostly at the end of one limb so i chopped off 7" and now im down to 62". I plan on going with a flatbow design with slight recurves. im aiming for 60# @ 27" i found the center and drew my lines at 1 1/2" wide, the length of the bow. i trimmed it down, close to the lines but not too close.
feel free to chime in and tell me im doing something wrong or give me advice, i want to get the most out of this baby.

Looks like about a 30 degree twist, that will come out eezy peezy with dry heat. No knots will really help you along as well.

Only if its not cleaned up. Im thinking it is. Scrape the back clean of sealer and see if any rings show through, if not? Make a bow.

I'm pretty sure it's clean too. I thought needed a thick ring for the back.

Nope, a clean ring is what a back needs. Thick, thin or in between doesn't matter to me.

Keep in mind it may matter to some builders, just not this one!

+1 pearl. Thin thick doesn't matter to me. If its clean its right as rain.

Cool,so you transfered the line with the most wiggle to the center and then to the opposite side?

i found the center of the bows width and followed the grain all the way down. then i went back to the center and and measured out 3/4" to both sides, making it 1 1/2" wide and followed the grain again all the way down the legnth.
