Finally got some osage staves
« on: August 27, 2013, 10:14:58 pm »
My father-in-law and I spent the past 2 nights spitting out some osage logs we cut last April.  We cut 8 logs and just set them out beside his shop and finally got some time to get them split and ended up with 33 staves and few billets.

Talk about straight! Was all the wood like that or did you pitch the crooked stuff?  That looks like quite the haul.

 8) 8 :) I'd settle for the crooked ones that are hiding behind the shed. Good haul.

Most of the stuff was pretty straight the shorter staves were from a crooked log so we just cut where it curved off. My father-in-law wanted some pieces to make turkey calls from the short piece. Also there were few pieces that twisted a little they the ones laying on the ground.

Let me know should you decide to trade some. I'm definitely  interested. There is no osage on my property and haven't seen any close around here although I'm sure it grows in the vicinity somewhere. Most farms and ranches are large in this area and the osage and black locust were removed years ago, replaced with wire and then opened up for irrigation.

Straight wood may make a better bow, but crooked wood makes a better bowyer
