Which bow are you hunting with this year?
« on: August 22, 2013, 11:08:42 pm »
Curious to see which bow people are choosing to hunt with this year. Lets just keep it to "natural material" bows since we're in the bow forum. I'm going elk hunting in the Oregon coast range this year. This will be my first time bow hunting (I grew up gun hunting white-tails in Wisconsin) so I'm pretty stoked. At first I decided to use my 64# yew longbow but after a few weeks of steady practice with it I decided that it was a little too heavy for me to achieve the accuracy that I want. It has a ton of power but that wont do me much good if I don't hit where I'm looking so I decided to go with my 55# hickory pyramid. It was the first bow I ever made but I love how it shoots and I feel the most accurate with it of all my bows. Here it is.

So, lets see what you're going to hunt with.  8)

I can't. I don't think I've made it yet.
Straight wood may make a better bow, but crooked wood makes a better bowyer

I'm hunting with a sinew backed yew bow. I killed a bull with it last year and am hoping lightening will strike again in a few weeks.

I have it narrowed down to three.   I'll probably use the two on the right the most since I'm hitting better with them.  The one on the far right I call Grilled Cheese.  Pearly made it for me.  The middle bow is one I just finished last week.  I haven't posted it yet.  I still need to dull it up a little before deer season

I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

I think I am better off to stick with The Kestrel, built by the amazing Minnesota Soy Boy.  I've been shooting that bow to the exclusion of all others and it's too late to start looking into something else. I got good arrow flight, it's comfortable in the hand, and even the heavy arrows I am using fly pretty dang fast, so it should do the job. Plus, it's short and bendy thru the handle...perfect for close quarters, the only way I have a chance of hitting much!
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

I was really tempted to hunt with my Gun Doc trade bow from last year. http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,33345.msg439926.html#msg439926

It's a super sweet bow I just didn't spend enough time with it to get used to shooting such a short bow. I plan to put some time into it this year so maybe next year it will taste some blood.

My new Echo Archery screamer and some 650 grn. sticks made by Bryce.  They did all the work--all I have to do is find an animal and shoot it :-X

Steve I think me and Carson switched rolls on that setup. Since he's the arrow wizard and all. But man he builds a fast bow!

I'll be hunting with a bow James Parker recently made me called High Country a bow that similar to the one he made you Pinecone.  He used some Japanese bamboo and yew I sent him as well as ipe and osage.  The tips are also albino water buffalo I sent him.  Grip is ostrich and fits me real nice.  It is about 57# @ 28".  He said these were the narrowest tips he has put on a bamboo bow.  Shoots great.  Heading out to the high country of the San Juan Mountains, Colorado with her soon for 2 weeks chasing elk.
