Smooth out nipples on back
« on: August 19, 2013, 03:59:45 pm »
Hi all,

I have this maple stave roughed out. I want to steam is and add some recurve. Currently the bow has some pin knots (I call them nipples since seeing that 6 nipples bow of Druid)

How much of the nipples can you scrape? Some are damaged and if I want to add recurve those nipples are in the way. Is it dangerous to scrape them too much (like nodes on bamboo, prone to splinter or fail)??

I have added some pics. Lately I also have been woodturning. Just wanna showed my work. I have made handles for rasp I paid like $2 for @ a flea market. The handle on the end of the rasp is exchangable. The nicholson rasp works very good  :D

Greetings,

Stefan

Don't scrape down the nipples of that lady, they are just beautiful! And this can cause a problem too!

Use some thin slats in the right dimensions for lifting the stave while recurving.

Nice handles too!

Are you also German?

Im German!

I LIGHTLY sand those nipps, just enough to not snag anything. As Simon said, it can cause problems if you take much off them.

I do the same as Pearly.  I'll hit them with sandpaper and smooth them out a little.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left
