Pine needle hat!
« on: August 15, 2013, 05:00:00 pm »
I made this hat a couple weeks ago and completely forgot to post a picture of it.  it's all from pine needles.  Its good and doesn't fall off at all, but the down side is it took hours upon hours to make and it's  a little on the warm side so it will have to wait for slightly cooler weather.

That is really cool! I bet that was a lot of work, but it turned out great and is definitely unique!

thanks guys, yeah it was a ton of work.  wish there was a market for it..unfortunately the time it takes to do one I'd have to ask $200 for it..lol   it took many many evenings of work to complete...  honestly, I never want to make another again, but I am glad it's done and I now have it!  I was looking for some sort of primitive hat idea that would have a brim to block the sun..  this is the best I could come up with. as time goes by I think it will collect trinkets I find in the woods, feathers, teeth...etc

Can you post another picture where we can clearly see the needles & how they're put together? This is really cool.

@ Twisted - pine needle baskets are fairly new to NDNs. They came along in the 30s or 40s to fill the continued demand for NDN baskets.  Try Tule(Scirpus sp.) lots of people make hats from them and they don't require so much work. Looks good though.

That is cool, I have tones of pine trees. Will have to check out the videos. I have 5 sons that are always looking for things to learn with natural materials around the property.

Holy crap, I was gonna "needle" you about your goofy headgear, but this hat is actually kinda stylin'. Now I feel like a sap for even thinking I could tease you about this.  Guess I was barking up the wrong tree.

Instead of riding the pine, the pine is riding you. Way cool hat.

I like it a lot. What did you use for string? I've thought about a hat but I know how long that would take so I've kinda put that on the back burner.
