48" Hickory, 47/48 @ 25, personal huntig bow
« on: August 08, 2013, 09:53:54 pm »
Fellas,
a while back Don Carter gave me a hickory stave, that had been cut and sealed back in '08. While finishing the 2 Odawa presentation bows decided to make me one (since I didn't have any of my bows anymore) to hunt with this fall.
The bow is hickory, generic Easter Woodland, and 48 inches long (ntn), weighs between 47/48 @ 25" and just a tad over 50# @ 26". Paint is ground earth pigment, and charcoal both mixed w/perch eggs (simmered to form a binder). The bow was finished with the usual pitch/deer fat/ beeswax. The paint was applied with a "rag" made from some thin leather scrap.
It has no appreciable set, shoots very hard and has a real smooth draw. Another example of some crummy no-good white wood bow, eh >:D

PS: I had another post a while ago and someone asked for dimensions but I had sent the Chickasaw bow all-ready.... if anyone would like dimensions from this bow....or the 43" Ironwood and 46" osage Odawa presentation bows please advise. I can still measure these.

I always admire your even bends.   Good color, and the carving on the nocks is a nice touch!

Here is the dimensions: (these are actual, after being all tillered out and not what the bows started out to be).
Width: [for the middle 12"] 1.28" / mid-limb 1.15" / tips @ knock shoulder .75" The bow is parallel sided for the center 12-14 inch, then a straight taper to the tips. The tips are layed out at 3/4" wide at the time of rough-in. They are a little bigger when you drop down 1" to cut the string knock.
Thickness: Middle 12" .558" / midlimb .423" and .428" / tips  .377". The stave is medium high crowned and the belly is very low crowned, the egdes are well rounded.

If I missed something please let me know.

Very nice as usual and thanks for the measurements. Those nocks are a real feature.

What is "w/perch eggs" ?

Dwardo, the binder for the paint is made by smashing up fish roe and simmering them. The Ojibwe and Odawa used perch (and others) for the color on their petroglyphs and it's still showing today.

Thank you for the nice comments and glad ya like it. This one is as simple as you can make a bow I guess, but it pleases me.
