"Old Horrible" Yew Longbow Take-Down
« on: July 13, 2013, 08:19:26 pm »
In the book "Hunting with the Bow and Arrow" Saxon Pope describes the demensions of his favorite yew hunting bow and describes how to make the weapon. By reading this book and taking the tillering measurements from John strunks longbow in tbb1 I was able to make what I believe to be a replica but modernized version of Saxon's "Old Horrible" though his was 70#+ I cannot shoot that comfortably so I dropped the weight a bit. This bow was my first longbow and also my first take down. When building I planned to give it away but while shooting it in I fell in love with its accuracy.
Also added a bit of sturgeon i had leftover, and pulled a page out of the Gordon handbook and added them as accents.
Thanks to Carson@Echo Archery for the 30+yr.old billets and bison horn.

70" NTN 62#@28" rawhide backed.

That's a sweet looking bow, my friend. I really love how the longbows shoot as well. Nice work, I cant wait to get my take down bow finished now.

Love it.  Fine job.  Very cool story and the Gordon handbook was well played.  Looks like it shoots like a dream.  If you change your mind on giving away Ill send you my address >:D

That is a nice bow Bryce. I'm not usually a long bow guy, but something about a takedown appeals to me.

Wow Pinecone, that is one beautiful bow! Awesome quiver too. What material is that arrow-pass, also sturgeon?

SWEET!  Is that the set of billets that you chiseled out of Carson when i was there?  If so, it sure didn't take you long to put em to work! Josh

Thanks weylin :) you need to finish that thing. It's nice know if I needed to I could pull this apart and throw it in my pack.

Thanks Matt, yeah it shoots real nice.

Thanks jonw, I don't like longbows either but this as a TD works.

Hey! Thanks Marc :)

Thanks accipiter, it's inlayed abalone.

Thank you Steve:)

Thank you mr Cody

Thanks rob:)

Adb, thanks for the compliment but I think this one will stay here for awhile at least.

Thanks mr outlaw it's my favorite type of skin, they just recently closed fishing for sturgeon for the next (i think) 5 years. Which is a bummer.

Thanks josh! Yep there the same pair :)
