Knot in Wood, What do I need to do?
« on: July 12, 2013, 06:52:23 pm »
I have a hickory board I got from a friend, however it has a knot that turned into a hole in the wood. It's about 3 inches from the end of the wood, should I cut it off or just keep the wood thick? The board itself is 70" and I am making a pyramid style flat bow, the knot will be in the way when I begin shaping the tips. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not a board bow guy but if I had a knot that close to the end of a stave, I'd cut it off, especially at that length.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

If its just a tiny little hole I wouldn't worry about it 3 inchs from the tip probably shouldn't be bending anyways

Yup chop it off, no need to frustrate yourself. Unless you want a challenge, post a pic. Maybe you can turn it into something cool.

In one of the tb bibles I read about an African tribe that used a hole at the end of the bow instead of a nock... Just sayin

When people ask "why didn't you do that the first time" you can be sure that they  have never made a bow before.

Like the boys said, lop it off! 66 or 67" is still a long bow!

Alright, thanks for all the replies, and as most of you suggested I'll just cut it off.

Also, thanks BillyF. for the information about the African tribe, I did not know that, and I found it very interesting of an idea. However, since I am just starting out I will just have to put that idea on the backburner until I understand more about the processes of making a bow, by getting my hands dirty. Thank you though.
