Red elderyberry static recurve, 40 lbs @ 31"
« on: June 23, 2013, 11:09:11 pm »
This bow was a bush three weeks ago. I boiled the tips a half hour each and bent around a 2 inch copper pipe. There was snakyness and twist to the limbs. Had to use dry heat
to remove twist. I used 5/8" dowel for the string bridges. The handle has a split piece of 3/4" bamboo tied to the back with linen soaked in super glue. The bamboo booster are two arrow size pieces both slid under the bamboo handle backing and just tied on to limbs. Adds about 7 lbs of draw weight. Bow is 63" ntn, non bending handle, 1 1/2" wide limbs.
Shoots fast for a light bow.  cheers fiddler49

Now thats one cool design and an attractive bow to boot. Very graceful bend on that beauty also, nicely done all
around on that one Fiddler.  :)
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.

Cool bow. We have elderberry everywhere but the red only grows in higher elevations here. Mostly National Forest or the Blue Ridge Parkway and in most cases uncutable.  I've been watching an elderberry here over the last few years think of building a bow with it.
 What is the draw weight?

Thanks lads, Pat, I've done the same thing, read through a post but still didn't see some posted info.
My subject title tells all, 40 lbs @ 31"
Red elderberry is a subarctic species. I think the lower 48, as we call you guys, have black and purple elderberry.  cheers fiddler49

OK, thanks for clearing that up. We have a variety that grows along the Blue Ridge Parkway that has red berries. It only grows at 5000' or above. I live at 2600'.

the elderberry we have around here is a straggly bush that right now has white flowers that look like big queen Anne's lace, the flowers turn to purple berries that is good for making wine and a cordial, my grandfather make cordial/syrup to put on homemade pancakes.  beautiful bow, no way we could make a bow out of the stuff we have here.  That's doing it with what you have.  great bow!
