I'm having some trouble distinguishing between hophornbeam and elm, the leaves look alike.

see yer from Mi. , up this far north the ironwood (hop-hornbeam) the bark is very unique. Here's some pics of the ironwood. The mature elms have a lot thicker bark and it looks "corky" with real deep furoughs. Hope the pics help ya some.

Wait a few weeks and the HHB trees will have a bunch of white hop's dangling from them. It only lasts a few days.
