Big black walnut log
« on: June 09, 2013, 07:11:13 pm »
Just sharing this walnut tree I cut. This was one of the biggest logs I've cut for bow staves It was to heavy to lift so I had to flip it end over end for 300 yards through the woods I also cut it with a handsaw it was hell getting this log but it yielded 6 staves and I could probably split a few of them and get more staves

Take a buddy next time...
End over end for 300 yards? that must have been fun  :o
Nice log. The heartwood/sapwood contrast will be cool on a bow(if you don't take all the heartwood off tillering and roughing out)

Yep the limbs will be all sap wood probably some heart wood in the Handle for most of the staves a couple pieces I may take it down a few rings to get more heart wood in

You might find that some of the outer rings are weak in tension.
