Hophornbeam Branch Bow

Some of you might remember a batch of six HHB branch bows I built for a group of kids a while back. Well, one of them was probably built too small, and it broke on the poor guy. This kid is only eleven and he could draw my 55lb at 28 inch hunting bow back twenty inches or so. And here I'd only built him a twenty pounder that was probably too short for him. I felt bad that the bow had broke, so I decided to give him an upgrade.

Here she is. 35 lbs at 20 inches, and 47 inches long NTN. Made from a significantly larger HHB branch than the others with a leather grip and floppy rest. I also added a black walnut inlay where the arrow passes just for looks.

 I kind of just whipped it together for him, and I was pleasantly surprised with how it turned out. Its simple, but this is some of my cleanest work yet.

Lucky kid. I love HHB saplings/limb bows. Its even meaner when its young like that.

That's been what I've noticed as well. The bigger older stuff seems more prone to set and isn't as snappy. This thing flings an arrow I tell ya. Its a little sucker and well below the legal hunting weight, but I know this thing could take a deer.

 Up here ,they're more commonly known as chesterfields and are quite abundant!  We have an open season this time of year , as they migrate to the curbsides  ( Mostly in college and university towns) and are even considered a nuisance species in some places. If you're lucky ,you can find one with a nice hide. Skin 'em up and have quality handle wraps for a good long time. Got a nice black one this time last year, myself! ;)
