Wych Elm static.
« on: May 29, 2013, 06:16:45 pm »
Ayup All,

Just finished up this wych elm static.
Gave me lots and lots of problems this one from splinters popping on the statics to compression problems mid tiller :( Luckily there was enough meat there to remove them. Same went for the compression problems top limb half way through tiller. All was going well at about 25 until I noticed the start of chrysal  :o heart sank as it does when the evils show up. Luckily i could only just about see them with a mag glass and in the right light.
Corrected the tiller thanks for your eyes Mike ;) Removed some more wood as I had some more to play with and this removed almost all of the chrysals!! The only two marks left are just scars about 3mm long that have not changed after a good shooting in and barely visible.
Usually chrysals spells the end of a bow in my experience but this one seems to have scraped through.
Learnt so much from this bow that will go into the next few statics.
62 inches long, and about 50 at 27.

Not the best pics but weather is wubbish.

Very nice. Weird that it started to chrysal with what looks like a very flat belly. Hopefully it doesn't give you anymore problems! Thanks for sharing!

Yup caught me out efin thing. The two tiny chrysal were on one edge of the top limb only. Suppose it could have been caused by a little limb twist due to the statics giving me trouble early on?? Will try and get a photo but they are hard to see in a strong light. Will try tomorrow if we see the sun...

Very nice!

Nice bend on that one. Glad you saved it!! ;)

That's a beauty. I would think with a chrysal would come a boat load of string follow but yours looks like it took zero
