feather orientation

Where should i place feathers in regards to the nock.  Should they be parelel or perpendicular to the bow string. Two fletch. Thanks in advance for your help.

I've always done them up and down with the string and the bow.

Most Eastern Woodland Amerindian arrows had feathers tied about 1" to 2"  away from the nock. On a two-fletch, the front of the feathers are in line with the string so they don't touch the bow... with the back of the feathers wherever they fall, it doesn't matter.  The feathers were usually tied on with a pronounced spiral.
