OK lets play another guessing game.  Cody and I were out in the hills the other day and saw this, what do you think caused it.

  A couger or a bear. Telephone poles going to my buddies house in Ocal National Forest look like that from the bears.

If there are Elk in your area I would guess, it was a Bull elk cleaning the velvet from his antlers.

Never saw a black bear do that to a tree, looks like a super sized whitetail rub then again it could be a kitty scratching post ;D

The broken branch at the top is about 10 feet from the ground. Here are a few more. 
Matney, who said we dont have elk? Not scraping the velvet off though, its too fresh and they havent been in velvet for months.  Just rutting and taking it out on a tree.  Justin

It was a bull Elk.  This is a prime example of what happens when you have a cow tag.  :'( The big ol bulls are everywhere.  Justin
