Jatoba questions.
« on: May 17, 2013, 01:36:53 am »
Hey i have noticed most people back jatoba here. Is this the norm? Im making three longbows soon out of 1'1/8 in wide jatoba thats about 68" long. Anyone have experience with these dimensions? going for 55 lbs or so. Any advice helps. Im not going to back it. Thanks guys.

I  had a ton of jatoba ever since my house was remodeled, the floors were ripped up and jatoba boards put in. I got all the scraps. I made a self bow out of jatoba before, which I gave to a friend, but i really think it's a good idea to back Jatoba. In my experience, Jatoba likes to have wild grain which is kind of hard to see and work with. (as do all brazillian hardwoods)  Besides, Jatoba makes a great belly for a bamboo or hickory backing.
Now a stave of jatoba, split from a tree...that's something I want to see ;D
