BL powderpost beetle damage?
« on: May 14, 2013, 02:27:15 pm »
I came across this in my pile of locust...looks like bug damage. How will this affect my staves? Found some large bores near the heart of the log, but those disappeared as I took off wood.

I am not sure what I am supposed to be looking at?  That looks like a pin knot in the pith to me.  That split is about half the log, right?  I dont see evidence of any wood borers in your pic - so it is only firewood if you are really cold and there is nothing else to burn :-)

This is the back of a quarter split, the second heartwood ring down from the sapwood.

I guess my eye was fooled thinking I was looking at the "inside" of the tree.  My opinion is still the same though - - no beetle marks that I see.  It is still good wood to my eye.

It's a small hole, and I found this topic regarding someone who seemed to have a similar problem: http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php?topic=38831.0

take it down another ring or two and see if it gets worse or you remove the damage.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left
