Cane arrows for my cousin
« on: May 10, 2013, 12:08:33 am »
After seeing my primitive hunting arrows, my cousin (who hunts traditional) wanted a set of primitive arrows with knapped heads to hunt with in this years deer season. This is what he got! The shafts are river cane, fletched with two turkey feathers. And the points are glass from bottle bottoms. This is some of my better work, I'm not sure I want to part with them! ;D

Good looking arrows. Don't fret about passing them on because you're getting better with each set you make. Now just make a few more for yourself. 8)
I found many years ago that it is much easier and more rewarding working with those that don't know anything than those that know it all.

Ajooter, The two fletch works great. This is kind of a hybrid style that I came up with. It's similar to a classic Cherokee fletch, but the quill is split all the way down. It also resembles the Powhatan style fletch in Allely and Hamm's encyclopedia. I have shot the traditional three fletch for as long as I can remember, but now I don't really see the need for an extra feather.
Twisted Hickory, I wish I knew what the points weigh, but I don't have a scale, I don't have a spine tester either, I just build what feels right :). These pictures are where I got the inspiration for the fletching design.

Great looking arrows.  I favor two fletched arrows too.  I can't tell the difference in the accuracy compared with three fletch, so why not get more arrows from each turkey?
