Do I have to retiller after toasting a belly?
« on: May 04, 2013, 09:20:53 am »
I am reworking my ash self bow and have it real close to final tiller. If I toast it, will this throw off the tillering? I don't have much wood to spare unless I want to get under weight.

Usually a little. It will add a little draw weight and it's usually not completely even so it will need a little adjustment.

If the tiller was good before you tempered, it should remain good afterwards.  If you add reflex while you temper, and I would, you might change the tiller a skosh, but you will pick up some draw weight.  Should be able to touch it up and have it right.  I have adjusted the setback in one limb while tempering to tweak the tiller as opposed to taking wood off.

Just to clarify,  I have adjusted the setback, or recurve, or kinks in one limb to tweak the tiller.

Yes, some retillering is often required after tempering.

Best way to answer your question is to look at the bows tiller.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.
