quick and easy leather handle wrap
« on: May 02, 2013, 05:17:18 pm »
this is an easy way to get a tight fit handle wrap without measuring anything, take some masking tape sticky side out and wrap it where the leather will go
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

now take a straight edge and cut the tape, be carefull to not get to deep, just cut the tape
now put the sticky side on the side of the leather that isn't going to show
and cut it out
I use a hole punch to make the stitching holes but I've used a hole punch and an ice pick use what you have

now you can stitch it up loosely cause you have to slide it over the bow, I like to use two needles and bring both sides down at the same time

now all you have to do is tighten the stitches up and tie it off, hope this helps some of you guys out, Bub

Thanks! Great idea. Do you ever use any glue or anything under the leather?  All the grips I've done have seemed too loose.

Adam if done this way they are pretty tight  and form fitting, when you cut the leather out wrap it around the handle and if there isn't a little gap cut a thin strip of one side, and remember that leather will stretch more one way than the other so find out which way that is and orient the leather so the stretchier way goes up and down and not around

Brilliant Bub! I've always had trouble with grips, and waste a lot of leather before I get a good fitting one. You just solved my problem! Thanks

Man, I can't believe I never thought of that! I'm for sure going to steal your idea! I hate to think of all the leather I have wasted making handle wraps! Thanks for sharing that with us.

You made that look so easy. I will definately use your method on the next bow that needs a leather handle wrap.
Thanks for sharing this idea.  8)

I used this today on a deep dished recurve handle that I had once thought would be impossible to put a handle on, but this method worked perfectly and I got an incredibly snug, perfect fit! Thanks again for this tip Bub! It's brilliant.
