Cheap and easy dowel maker.
« on: April 24, 2013, 09:51:35 pm »
I thought since there are a couple of threads on making dowels here is a cheap alternative. I have yet to make these since I have about 100 red osier shafts but here is the link.

Hope someone gets some use out of it. It looks like it would work pretty good.

I made one from a bit bigger steel stock, it works great. Bad part of the video is he didn't give any dimensions. I got my plans from a different link, and it took me about four or five trys to get it right. They are dandy though.

Good to see someone chime in with some experience with this type of dowel maker. That will be next winters project. Right now I have turkey on the brain ;)

I had used 1/4 thick flat bar for mine. It doesn't make a real smooth one like in the video. I would say a thinner material would cut better. Time for a revisment. Lol!!

I make a tapered and footed shaft. I just use block planes to achieve round .. works fine.  Pluss I can use the block plane on other stuff like the edges of bows "V" splices etc.  you just need a track to set the arrow in.

Thank you for sharing!

Perfect thing to take a 3/8" oak dowel down to 11/32"!
