I feel like crying over this
« on: April 18, 2013, 12:36:05 pm »
Oh man. The company I work for manufactures auto part from aluminum. I just learned that Tuesday someone threw away 224 12" high carbon saw blades that we use to cut castings. These were high quality Japanese steel. All those knives, scrapers, and points right down the drain! I searched all the scrap steel bins, but was informed that the scrap company had already picked them up and was gone. I sure missed out. I did manage to get 5 carbide tipped ones, but missed out on the HSS blades. Here's a pic of one of the carbide tipped blades. Hopefully they are good as well.

I hear that the carbide tipped blades are made from soft steel used as a filler so to speak. There is no need for high grade steel in the blade when the tips do all the cuttin.

Yeah, I know. I guess I'll try one and see if they are hard enough. If not, they didn't cost me nothing. Sure wish I coulda got 200 high speed steel ones. Dang it man!

Find the local saw sharpening places and ask what they throw out.

I'll bet that some guy named Gsulfridge with be watching all the carbon saw blades use to cut castings LIKE A HAWK from now on.

I pity the fool who is in charge of throwing out the next batch.   >:D

I know what you are saying about throwing out whatever. "RRR" Reduce Recycle Reuse. I worked in a shop and a guy was looking for scrap pieces of wood that had no way related to our business. But never theless the boss did not want him around. It's not a matter of scrounge, its they had to pay for that scrap why should they give it away.!!!! >:D  It's better off in the dumpster and in the DUMP...

Those blades were mine for the taking. All we have to do is fill out a "material removal form" and get manager approval. I just didn't know about it until it was too late.

Ive got a chrome-vandanium steel blade I cut in half to make a knife, still have half if you want it. I also have a high speed steel blade, but no idea on where it is.
I also have an old carbide.
If you want one, we can work out a trade.
It ticks me off when this kind of stuff happens. One of my neighbors is so bad about it that I freqently peek into his trash cans and occasionally ring the doorbell asking if I can take stuff from them. Its awesome sometimes, but I get mad when I miss something.
Carbide blades are decent. Not super good steel, but not low carbon either. Makes a decent throwing knife, but not much else. Throwing knives need to flex, not crack like high carbon. I think the blades I have are medium.
