Saved some osage today
« on: April 18, 2013, 05:36:32 pm »
Got a call from my Dad the other day and he turned me on to some land being cleared for development. Just so happened that it was raining this morning so I definitely couldnt work >:D. This wasnt the greatest osage but I cant hardly stand to see it pushed into brushpiles and burned so I fired the chainsaw up and dug in. I tried to salvage what I could but it was a tangled up mess in there and the dozer tore a bunch of it up. Its not a very big haul but I felt good about it.

The longest one is 6 feet and the shortest is 4 feet and  they all had decent rings.

Nice haul okie.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Those look pretty good...but what do I know. I am still searching for my first stave to make my first bow with.  Congrats though.

Good save. I just cut some myself and when I pulled in there was a pile cut up to burn, made me want to cry.

I have wanted to do that for a long, long time, but did not know it was legal.

I have done the same thing. Better to get what you can than have it be burn't, rot or go to landfill.
Some of the stuff I got was bulldozed and it ended up having cracks in certain sections. They were caused by the dozer rather than whilst the tree was alive or from checking after cut down.
Despite that I still ended up with plenty of good wood.

Thats good ole Arkansas osage. I live right on the ar/ok stateline so Im not too picky about where it comes from. I would like to think all my good osage comes from Oklahoma but to be honest I usually get better stuff when I cut it in Arkansas. These were growing in a low area pretty close to a creek so I figured they might have some good rings.
