Leopard Spot Osage
« on: November 05, 2007, 07:09:27 pm »
This past weekend I started pealing the sap wood off some some Osage Staves that were cut about a year back.
Right under the bark there are these ovals that are slightly indented.
Under the ovals, In the last layer or two of sap wood are pockets of dark yellow sticky resin.
Under the resin pockets, on the heart wood are spots that resemble those on a leopard.
This looks real cool!!!  But I have never seen such.

Has anybody else ever seen this before??

I am going to try and learn to post photos.

Thanks
David

I'm betting it was bugs or some disease got on that ring when it was just under the bark, I've seen a lot of injuries that caused darker spots in wood.  Sounds like it'll make a neat looking bow.
