little buckthorn bow
« on: April 07, 2013, 10:10:40 pm »
Heres a little light weight buckthorn bow I just finished up and shot in. 58" ntn and around 30# @ 24". This stave has a real nice
color and grain so I finished it with tru-oil only, no stain or dye finish. Bottom limb has a 10" section at the end where the back
is concave. That area is non bending because of the problem there but the bow shoots smooth and quiet with no handshock.
Heres some pics;

That's a cool little bow.  I can't wait to get back to WI in June and cut some buckthorn.  Sounds like a good wood.

Sweet looking bow, Greg. Nice bend.

Just a question, why couldn't you make the belly convex in that stiff area to keep the thickness taper even across the limb? Nice little bow though :)

Nice looking bow Greg, it seems Buckthorn has a knack for giving you a concave somewhere in the limb.  I've never seen that coloration on the back of buckthorn before.....beautiful :)

Thanks ksnow, give buckthorn a try its great stuff
Thanks Kenny
TactialFate, belly was scraped convex and thickness taper evened and checked with calipers. Still couldn't get any bend through that area though, limb cross section shape just made it to stiff there. Had the same problem with my first buckthorn bow and thinned
the similar area on that bow in attempt to get it bending and had a tension break. Decided not to push this one. ;)
Thanks Cody, I think the color may have come from letting it season for about 10 months with the bark on.
Thanks Rich
Thanks Zion

That shape of limb will be stiff that's just the way it is! That tiller is perfect in my opinion for what you had to work with great job I think it is really nice!
