got a deer skin in freezer want to make a quiver whats the best way to tan it and maybe the simplest

Jack, Tanning is an option, but you can also make one from the raw hide. The two shown are ten years or so old. one is a winter hide, one is a summer hide. I cut the pattern, formed around a last, while dry. Wet it, sew it up, and slide it over the last and let it almost dry. The last is waxed and is in three parts with a center wedge that is pulled to get the parts out. It does shrink some, and wants to stick to the parts even though they are waxed. Just an option, good luck!!! Almost forgot, it is varnished inside.

I have made a few like that and they will last and look cool,only problem is deer have hair not fur so it will break as you wear it,every time you take it off you will have hair all over your back,especially after you wear it a while. Not form the hair slipping but just from breaking,it is hollow and breaks very easy.

They do look good ,that's for sure. Nice work on them.

I like those! I just butchered a goat, thought about making a quiver from the skin. I was going to put the hair on the inside, though.

That is true Pappy!! I call it patina

! They aren't a warm weather quiver either. Anything with hair in it will, to me anyway, be uncomfortably warm, even one on a belt will make you sweat where it is in contact with your leg.

and yes they are warm,I have a coyote one that will burn you up in hot weather,it is a back style.

:)not sure on goat if it is fur or hair . $:-\$

Great looking quivers!

When the rawhide is dry (or drying) do you finish it with anything to help repel water? If you got caught in a downpour with one on your back, would the rawhide absorb water and become slick and squishy again?

I use a clear coat acrylic on darn near everything, but it isn't primitive

hatcha, I use a Tung oil based spar varnish. Suppose to be all natural, I don't know, but it works great.
