found some material
« on: March 27, 2013, 01:13:28 pm »
With my inexperience, I'm not sure how this material rates with the best quality. I had a few other pieces that were nearly flat and only about an inch thick.

How does this stuff look and will heat treating it improve its knappability?

Some of that really looks nice the stone I bought looks like that it's heat treated makes it work easier.

From the looks of it you live in TX. Seems like you got some great material! Get an old turkey roaster and fill it with sand. Then start spalling the larger pieces and cook it up! I like a big copper rod for spalling. One about 1 1/4" by 5" long would knock off some sizable spalls with ease.

appreciate the replies and thanks for the suggestion on the roaster and 'big copper spalling rod.' i've been wondering what would be the best to use for this.

using a roaster, what temp should i use and for how many hours?

It's nice to see another Texas boy breaking rock. Will is correct a little will slick that right up. Some of that type doesn't even need heat.     Tower
