My "new" tool
« on: March 19, 2013, 06:07:45 pm »
Im sure this is old news to some of you. Its all new to me. I used to lay out my thickness lines with a compass. It worked good. The other day while tryng to lay out the nastiest stave Ive ever touched I tripped over an idea in my head. I dont have three hands so you will have to use your imagination, its quite simple. The stick of wood is a 1.5" x 4" chunk of something off my shop floor. The marks arent any certain dimension, just gauge lines I use. I cut the groove in with a rasp edge and rat tail. My forefinger knuckle keeps my intended line right on the bows back/side line while my right hand gently keeps a pencil pushed down and into the groove as I pull from handle to tip. Boy does it work good, fast and super easy. The best part is that it follows every nook and cranny the back has to offer, thats valuable to fine tiller. I always lay them out parallel. The taper comes in later for my style of building.

Yah, until you cant find your "mark" on the other side of the limb. I did that to, never was consistent enough for me.

I have been using these things on pyramid board bows for a while. I think I might of got em from one of foresttrekkers buildalongs on tradgang. I imagine you might be able to rig up something rounded like for stave bows too? I use em same as you except it is always one measurement.

"The way of heaven is like the bending of a bow-
the upper part is pressed down,
the lower part is raised up,
the part that has too much is reduced,
the part that has too little is increased."

I used the finger thing as Pappy and Chris use, but could never get equal amounts on both sides. Thats where my little gauge lines come into play. I was always erasing and going back again trying to keep each side even. This little diddy elimanates all that jazz. One line and its right every time, plus no SLIVERS! I dont like redundant work, or re-do's. Just my quirky thing I guess.

thats how i use these -
whichever ones handy at the moment.
a bub of mine took a wood one like this and drilled it out to hold a pencil
with a screw to keep the pencil from moving.
