Question on my oops

Made a red oak board bow used the full 72 in. My oops is it came out at only 20 lbs. can I shorten it some to get a few more pounds out of it? Give it to neighborhood kid and do another one and pay more attention to my next one. You can't put that wood back on!!! Lol!!!

72" and 20#? That thing must be 1/4" thick man! Cut 2" off each end.

I know nothing about board bows but could you glue a thin piece of hickory on as a backing?

what weight were you looking to get? to tell you the truth i'd do both methods mentioned, what is the front profile?

Welcome! Coming in under weight happens a lot to beginners. Finish it and start another. 2 in of either end will bring you to about 30#. Jawge

I was thinking about taking that 2 in off each end. I just wanted  like 30 or 35 something to practice with.

I totally did that with my first bow, also a red oak board 72" long.  I just gave it to a friend with lots of kids and moved on to another bow.  do both limbs bend evenly?

i agree with outlaw, since you have a nice flat back already you could glue on a thin backing (even induce a little reflex at the glue up) and shorten the limbs.

Back is drywall tape with 5 layers of tb3. Tiller is good on both ends and it shoots ok. Just at 20#.

Might want to start another ,but if determined,get a heat gun and remove that f/g tape and repeat drywall tape is for drywall !lol! Then heat treat some reflex in and add some protection for the back,or take what you learned and start another.

Well finished out the bow and gave it to a neighborhood kid. He is my nephews friend. He also likes to try and make his own bows. He is trying with saplings in one day cut them and build a bow. I also gave him 3 arrows so he can get started shooting. His family are from Mexico not a lot of money  he is 15 or 16 and a good kid takes good care of his mom and siblings. He was a very happy lad. Wants me to show him a few things while he is on spring break. Told him I would be happy to! He wants to learn it all. Told him we just got to find the stuff we need and we will get started. Glad I could make his day cause it also made mine.
