Hickory Backed Black Walnut Longbow
« on: February 19, 2013, 10:46:05 pm »
Here is one I made a while ago...sometime last year.  Finally put the finish on, made a string and added a leather handle.

My brother wanted to make a bow and asked if it was possible to use black walnut I said YEAH DUDE! that's on my list.  We went to the lumber yard and went in on a board with the straightest grain we could find.  I walked him through the process as we both made similar bows.  It was fun!  Now he says he wants to make another one some time.   This was the first bow I backed with wood as well.

Stats:

72" ttt
49 lbs @ 28
Walnut on the tips
leather handle
about 1.75" at the fades just under .5" at the tips

That is beautiful, I really like your bows very classy and artistic.  My favorite is your Silverleaf bow.

Great looking bow, I'm admiring the tips, does Black walnut  make for a quick bow..?

Great looking tiller and finish work on that one.

Excellent work! My kinda bow... very clean lines. Love your tip overlays... very cool. Your tiller is spot on, with very little set. Nice!

Very nice, good job on that. I once tried black walnut backed with maple, I went narrow and so the black walnut failed in compression so I would say you got it right on by making it wider. Looks very classy.

autologus, Thanks!  Glad you like 'em.   I appreicate the comment.

Gun Doc, coaster500, Bowman53,  THANKS!

bow101 - Thanks!  Not really sure if black walnut makes a quick bow or not.  This is the only one I have but it shoots really nice and I will definately make another one.  I think I'm going to try a recurve next....we'll see what happens.

Badly Bent, PEARL DRUMS,Pappy - THANKS!

adb - thanks! I wish I could make em as good as yours! Speaking of set when I look at these pictures I can see more set than I originally thought it had.  I wish I would have glued in some reflex to remedy that but it does shoot nice and smooth and is actually pretty snappy too.  Next time I'll try some reflex.  Thanks agian!

Lesken -thanks!

ryoon - Thanks! hurry up and make one before med school!  Would love to see it!

LEGIONNAIRE - Thanks!  I thought this one was narrow.  I was originally planning on 2 inches wide becuase I had never worked BW before and wasn't sure how it would hold up but we were trying to get as many board staves as we could when we cut it and the demensions just worked out that way.  Wish I could say I planned it.  I am going to try to make one shorter but will probably go wider just for my own sanity.  Thanks again!
