Are these 1/4 " oak slats good for 20 pd kids bow?

I believe that it was Fiddler who mentioned in another post his method of using 1/4" oak slats from lowes to make kids bows.  Do you guys think the grain in these two slats are safe for kids bows?

The grain starts to runout the last 6 inches or so on one end on both slats as you can see in the pics.

Is that one long enough to cut off the run out? Either way, I say if you keep them nice and low weight, like 30# - 35#, don't make them too short, and back them with a heavy linen, you should be just fine. Unbacked, I would probably bet they would hold. But that one does have some questionable run out.

the part that has too little is increased."

20#s and under...ya that's fine. I say go for it. Depending on how long you make it, it might not make 20#s though.

I have made a few kids bows out of the 48" 1/4" oak slats from lowes. They all turned out about #15 at 20". I backed them with linen that I had dyed with rit dye. I glued on a handle section that was cut out of a 3/4" oak board.

Thanks for the replies guys.  These are 48" long slats and I was planning on leaving them full length but I guess I could shorten them a little.

If you keep them full length they will end up 10-15# @ 20". they make speedy little bows. Also don't let the grain worry you to much. At that weight, you will be surprised what the boards will handle.
