Hawthorn Sapling Bow

Hi All,
   I have been out of the loop lately but have started to shoot this one..  The last bow I built about a year ago to date. The draw is a little short would you re-tiller and ask for a longer draw length?  The Specs are, 5 3/8 brace is this to high?. 64" NtN  55#@24"  1 3/8 wide upper limb 1 1/2 lower at fades. It did take approx 2" set or bent.. Oh by the way hows my tiller look??

I think thats a lovely looking bow.  I also think you can get more draw length out of it.  The top limb looks a bit stiff about 2/3 of the way out.  After thats evened out (relative to the bottom limb, I bet you could still scrape a bit on the outer 1/3 of both limbs.  I bet this bow could easily be pulling 27-28 inches at 50-55 lbs.  Hawthorne is dense and also very strong wood.

+1 for what Rossfactor says.
Look along the length of the unbraced limbs, that should show you where the set is concentrated. Leave those areas alone and scrape some off the outer 1/3 - 2/3.
I'd think you could get back to 26 or 28 no prob. You may get a little more more set, but that's not the end of the world.
You want the draw to match what's comfortable for you.
Remember an extra 4" of draw is probably only an inch and a half or less movement at the tips.

Long lost Chuck! Good to see you around again. The bow looks good. I agree with whats been said. It will handle another inch if thats what you need. A bow you cant shoot comfortably isnt a lick of good to you, thats what I always say.

 Im sitting on the fence with this one, Thanks  Gabe, Del, PD,and others on the good advice  Blackhawk I might go with what you said, I do really like the way it looks. It shoots good if my forms on. The draw is short but not so bad if im shooting stumps,targets quick pull and release not like waiting for the cameras 10 sec delay. I hate to add any more set then what it all ready has, maybe add some heat.
Zion The hawthorn is a good bow wood and we have lots of it here I got to get back out and get cutting . Where you at in WA I use to live in Enterprise OR sure do miss WA and OR..

Wow, now that i see more pics that really is a nice bow! A little set won't hurt. I just made a bow outa my last piece of hawthorn, i need to find s'more too! I'm in north central WA, yeah if i moved i would miss it round here too..

Classy bow, nice handle. Looks like you can easily make the mid and outer limbs work a little more to get some more draw, also, seems like your set is accordingly concentrated on the inner limbs. I particularly like the little stripes on the limbs as well.

If you really hate the set you could strap it to a piece of 2x1 with the belly up and rubber strapping pulling the tips down under a little tension.
If you thenlightly heat treat the belly (especially the inner section) it should pull back about about straight and toughen up the inner third a tad as it heats.
A little work then easing off the outer thirds and you'll proabably end up with about the same draw weight, but at an inch or two more draw, with little or no extra set.
Mind it's easy to say that from sat here with tea and toast...
Yeah you should all get busy while I sit here and tall ya what to do!

Thanks Del, I'm on my first cup of coffee, looking at the bow and getting ready for 7 days of work. Much rather be drinking joe and working on a bow. Can I heat right  threw the finish or scrap it off first?
