any of yall ever do this
« on: February 13, 2013, 01:10:59 am »
When I first started Making bows all I had to dry heat my bows was a cheapo heat gun. I rarely got wood to move much with it. Since then I use a space heater I just clamp the bow onto the form ,to keep it from moving, set the heater an inch or two away and leave it for about half an hour ( or untill I remember it  ::) )    since then it's been very easy for me ,recurves and such are no problem.
I like free stuff.

My heat-gun revelation was making a stand to hold the gun. So much easier and increases patience no end.

I have put a bow in front of a space heater to pre-warm it before I put it on the form to bend it.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

when I took John Strunks class thats what we used on 2 bows. except he heated the wood w/heater before
placing in form. I don't think it matters which order heating is done as long as the bend is conservative.
otherwise I would ere on the safe side and heat then clamp.

The guy that first taught me to work bows showed us a setup he used for heat bending work.  It was two five foot long space heaters that faced eachother with an insulated hardy board box and lid around them.  He could pull a piece of Osage out of that thing and tie it into a big pretzel knot!
