My first black locust
« on: February 06, 2013, 06:34:02 pm »
This bow is from a stave that was sent to me by Badly Bent.   64" tip to tip.  Heat treated with a slight flip of the tips.  The stave had some cool curves which my pitiful photos don't show.  The bow is 1 1/2" wide at the fades with four and a half inches of handle which barely bends.  Came in at 40lbs at 28" with about an inch of set.  This is the first hunting weight bow that I have built that weighs well under a pound.  It is light as a feather and has great cast.  It popped a tiny splinter and I wrapped it up with some black B50 and got carried away with some decorative wrapping, partially inspired by the ancient wrapped European bows.....  I don't know much about that, but this thing shoots great.

Thanks guys.  I haven't done much finishing work to this bow yet.  I will try to get some better pics up when I have it dolled up a little.

Nicely done my friend that bow has great tiller. Looks like you figured out that black locust on your first attempt with that wood. :)
Funny you lifted a small sliver on her because the one I made from the sister stave did the same thing to me and I wrapped it also.
Thanks for posting, good to see some of your work again and I'm with bubby on the request for more pics.

Thanks guys.  I am sold on black locust as a bow wood.  I wish I had a better camera...  My old flip phone (yes people still carry those!) is all I have to take pictures on.  Greg, I appreciate this fine stave you sent me.  I am amazed at the cast per bow weight with this BL.  I think it runs a close race with the "KING" for how narrow a bow you can hunt with.

Nice job!  Nice bow!
Talking trees. What do trees have to talk about, hmm... except the consistency of squirrel droppings?

Another good one, Howard. I have yet to try black locust. I guess I'll have to get me some!
