I'm considering buying a 6 ×48 belt sander and I am wondering if 3/4 horsepower will keep me happy... or will I kick myself and wish I got a bigger 1??? thanks for any input

The belt is the thing! Same with bandsaws, a decent blade makes all the difference.
I recently got a small belt sander 4 x 36" ? It was ok but didn't really see, to remove much wood until Santa gave me a 40 grit belt... oh boy that makes a BIG difference. Gotta treat it with respect now.
Depends how much you are going to use it and what sort of bows you make. I'd say the most important thing is quick belt change and decent dust extraction.

like Del said grit is key, I use 36 grit in the red or blue belts as they last longer, and get one of those big erasers to clean the belt with, that also helps keep the belt working longer, Bub
