stave help
« on: January 26, 2013, 05:25:21 pm »
This stave was cut in 09, thought it was BL, not sure?
1 1/2" thick, 2" wide. White rings 3/16" thick together.
If it is BL should I chase the next 2 ring or will it work with the white wood still on?
Not sure what to do.

Looks like locust to me. The top two rings need to go.

Looks like black locust to me. The two outer sapwood rings need to go.

Oh, that's what Pearl already said :D

OK. When I remove the rings it will leave me with a little over 1" thick at handle.
Do you think that will be enough for a stiff handle?
Also, should I leave it 2" wide?
I've been looking through my BB books but not finding answers to my questions.

I have 2 of these and messed them up by taking to much wood off to begin with.
Live and learn.
Thanks

Don how long is the piece? If you have a solid inch at the handle you should be ok. If not make a bendy handle. Take a look at this for an idea.

An inch thick handle should be stiff as long as you don't make it real narrow.  You can build it up with layers of leather to fill it out it you want to.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Thanks fellas
I took off the other 2 rings and I'll have just a bit over 1" at the handle so I think I'll be OK.
The other stave I cut to bow shape, I think I'm S O L on that one. But I may back it and just see what hapens.
As for a bendy, I haven't done one yet so it's time to learn I have some osage seasoning and it's
only about 50".
Thanks for the help.
