Mountain Maple Bow

Very nice character bow there Zion.I've got a friend who returned from Colorado/Utah area elk hunting and he said he noticed a number of maple growing up at 6 to 7 thousand feet.He might bring some of it home he said next year.He said the leaves in the fall were crimson red like a maple.The trees were 6 to 9 inch circumference.Think that would be the same stuff?If so I'll be looking forward to working with it.You gotta let the stuff dry more Zion.Still nice job though.

what are you using to test draw weight?

Thanks Beadman, yeah i think that stuff would work great. The stuff i use grows super straight and usually in clumps, kinda like serviceberry. Lol don't worry, this was the runt of the haul so i decided to make a quick bow outa it. I'm letting the bigger ones actually dry out.

Dictionary, i use a normal bathroom scale. I use a  construction level/ruler to draw the bow down on and then look at the weight. (The stick only goes to 23," but weight can still be assessed based on the reading i get from there.)

Thanks Keenan and Turtle. It seems like this wood always has some knots, it's cool looking wood once you take the bark off!

My shoulder has been pretty tired lately too. Sometimes its hard to resist shooting tho!

That's pretty heavy for that length. 

 I've got a 64in bow that draws 90lbs and I know what a pain it can be to draw after awhile.

Nice bow Zion,

I like your work! I love mountain maple! It is a lot like vine maple. I have dried lots of them in my hot box. Two weeks at 100 degrees or so and she's ready to start carving on. Have fun with that stuff, there's plenty of it near Tonasket.               Dale

Hey thanks Pappy, danny, soldier, Dale and druid! Yeah, i think in the future i'll try making a longer bow if i try to go much passed 90 #. Luckily i got just the piece. Just a few more months to wait!

yeah Dale i think i'm really set with wood around here, so much good stuff grows around sagebrush 

Druid your bows are sooo cool, and always with nice weight, this is like a baby bow compared to some of them
