Those things were made to be arrow heads. A big alligator gar would give you a lifetime supply or arrow heads.

Nope, haven't shot them... they were expensive to get. ;)

They are much stronger than bone so they should be good for all sorts of small game.  I imagine that a very big gar would provide large enough scales for deer hunting.

Patrick, will you bring some to the Classic? I have a small piece of gar skin with small scales and often thought they would make great bleeders for stone tipped arrows.

I like this post. I agree it looks perfect for lil critters. My brother just caught a 5 ft alligator gar 3 months ago. We threw the scales away.  I didn't think about arrowheads.

patrick-were those scales that flat naturally?
i have a half dozen or so someone gave me at mojam a cupla yrs ago.
they are not quite as flat....
still intend, one of these days, to get em hafted into arrows anyways.

Yes, the scales I got are naturally flat.  You do have to be picky and select the best ones, though.  Some of them are curved.  Seems like the largest ones are the most curved.
