Native american Fletching.

im looking to fletch some 24" arrows. and i have the 6 inch long feathers.(secondary) they are about 1.25-1.5 inches tall and im not sure if i should leave them like that, shape them, shorten them, ect. I want to do a 3 fletch like most people use for their regular arrows. I want to make them as close to Native fletch as possible. Any help is a appreciated.

I was looking through my copies of Encyclopedia of Native American Bows, Arrows, and Quivers (vol. 1 & 2).  Based on the lengh of your arrow shafts it would seem that arrows from some tribes living in either the midwest, plains, or southwest would make good replica arrows.  Any ideas as to what tribe's arrows you are wishing to replicate?

not in particular, just interested in making some kind of native arrows, anything will work for me the more "Indian" the better

How many ways can you fletch with 3 split feathers?  ;D


The natives typically wrapped on the ends and not through the feathers is what i've read.

muffin wrap both ends feathers about 5" long and make a strait cut 3/4" tall at the rear to 1/4", long and low

What bubby said or you also go for a straight cut 1/2" tall down the entire lengh of the feather.  Good luck.
