Well, I found this stuff just up the road from my shop.  A tree had fallen across the road in a storm and it was cut up and laying on the side of the road.  When I first drove by at quick glance I thought maple.  Right now that must have been wishful thinking because it is definitely not maple.  I'm guessing it is some species of red oak but was curious if anyone can give me a positive ID.  It split nice and straight and took less than 10 min to quarter the logs and then split a few of those even smaller.

Definetely not maple. It's not any oak either.

Looks a lot like hickory!  :o

I can't say for sure...but it looks more like red elm to me...especially that last close up pic of the bark....if it is a hickory it should be easy to tell by its smell. If it don't smell like hickory,it ain't a hickory. Could possibly be a hickory tho...

Clint I don't consider much how it split on wood species type....I've had hellish elm,hickory,locust,osage,hhb etc.....all split like murder...and I've also had all those species pop like butter as well.

I was wondering about some kind of hickory, just assume it split too easy to be hickory.  There is a smell too it but I am currently too congested to get a very good whiff.  Guess I'll head back up the road and pick up the rest of it if it's elm or hickory :).

It is Elm but what variety I am not sure, probably American Elm or Slippery Elm.  Good bow wood either way.

Well I think I might settle with some kind of hickory on this one.  I went back down to get what wood was left and took a look at the bark on the upper part and it looks like a hickory tree that fell in my woods a couple years ago.  Also while cutting some up for fire wood a few hickory nuts fell out of a hole in a piece.  Looks like I'm set on hickory for awhile :)
