I am.  Lots of Northen Europen in me.

They used the Neanderthal artifacts to try and disprove the knuckled dragging image that Neanderthals have had for quite some time.

I have told people for years that " Anybody that is smart enough to flint knap is SMART".

I watched it and it was excellent!   Over the last few years I have seen a few different shows on Neanderthals. One said all red heads are descendants of Neanderthals but shortly after that I saw one that said there was absolutely no evidence that modern man and Neanderthals interbred even though for a while they shared Europe(about 10,000 years). I'm sure some must have interbred and this show with the DNA testing proves it.
 Their stone tools, the pitch manufacture and their art all show that they had intelligence higher that previously thought.
  I also thought it was interesting that only because the first Neanderthal skeleton found was riddled with signs of arthritis(not realized until later) it was assumed that the stooped over stance placed them closer to the great apes then to humans. Aren't we an arrogant lot!  ::)

My daughter  and I argued this subject for some time....(she went to college for it) I am glad I have been proved right! ha! It was a great show!

Patrick, the Neanderthal's style of knapping is totally different from what is used today. The guy discussing it said it is actually more difficult to do with todays knowledge of lithics even though the results looked more simple.

I watched last night and really enjoyed it. It brought up a lot of good points. Nova is usually a good show. But the homo erectus carrying a bow 40,000yrs ago me thinks hollywood. They shoulda got Billy to play the part 8)

I Bloody knew, Bone Deep that the Books had it ALL Wrong.
Always thought they didn't just dry up and blow away...
They are still here in nearly each and every one of us.
And I figured that we had them Drawn all wrong...

The bit on their Knapping was Very Cool to boot.

Pat, I know the technique.  It's called "levallois".  I use it for spalling most of my rocks.  Works great on rounded nodules. :)

If you want to see someone hairy you should see a young guy I work with.  A few years ago he shaved Who Dey in his chest/stomach and Jay 7 in his back hair for a Bengals game.
