Xbow ammo notes
« on: January 06, 2013, 11:22:19 pm »

Getting bolts to fly from my crossbow has been a learning experience! My first bolts flew in wild corkscrew loops with impact at 10 yards in a 12" group - not good enough for hunting.

I tried several different fletching materials, precut feathers, traditional wood vanes and these scissor cut naturals. Kept getting eratic flight from most of the bolts. I tried longer shafts, shorter shafts, different weight heads for more or less FOC. Finally figured out that these shorter arrow like projectiles are extremely sensitive to point alignment. Using a spin tester and carefully resetting each point to perfect spin balance fixed the problem.

Finished shafts are 15" BOP with 125 Grizzlys on the poplar and 200 Ace on the oak, 400 and 560 total grains respectively. The fly straight and are ready for Texas hogs in a couple weeks.
