Backing strip question.

Will it work OK if the wood backing strip is in two pieces or should it be a single piece?  I have some nice Ash that would make some good backings but its only 55 inches long.  I could do a kerf splice at the handle.

If it's not bending in the handle two pieces shouldn't matter. A handle wrap would cover whatever type of joint you make :)

You can also put an overlay over the joint then shape it so it fills your hand when you grip the bow. The overlay will add lots of strength to the backing joint.

I've let two hickory backing strips overlap by about 1/4'' in the middle of a bendy handle bow.(although I guess a bit longer is better)
and it's only wrapped with some art sinew at that part. It hasn't caused any problems for me  :)
