Clear drying glue for gluing down silk/linen backing? Elmers?
« on: December 29, 2012, 11:57:02 am »
I would like to use a clear drying glue for gluing down a fabric backing. Would elmers hold? I am guessing probably not a great idea,  ;D. What glue should I use? Titebond has this clear drying wood glue now too:

http://www.amazon.com/Titebond-Translucent-Wood-Glue-oz/dp/B006XD1YTY

I was thinking of trying that out, especially if I can find some locally. Anybody ever use it?

EDIT: Also, does the original titebond glue dry translucent? According to alot of websites, it does? Here is one example:

http://www.amazon.com/Franklin-5062-Titebond-Original-Translucent/dp/B002KDPDEI/ref=sr_1_3?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1356794850&sr=1-3&keywords=Titebond+Translucent

I have never used it, so I don't know.

Gorilla wood glue dries clear if I remember right. You'll find it locally and for pretty cheap.

original titebond dries a transluscent yellowish brown. you can use titebond but you probably want to use titebond 2 or 3 cause they are more water resistant. gorilla wood glue is basically titebond 2, just make sure you don't use the polyurethane gorilla glue. :-)

Both have turned my backing yellows,  :(. Maybe I use too much glue. I have read online that gorilla wood glue dries clear as well, anyone else have experience with gorilla wood glue?

Get some epoxy and do it properly. Plenty of crystal clear epoxies out there that will do a far better job.
Many of the white glues dry clear but even the varieties that are supposed to be pretty waterproof or water resistant quickly turn milky when damp.
A small quantity of Epoxy may be expensive but you will more than get  full value for it.
