lumber store list
« on: December 19, 2012, 09:31:35 am »
I am finally going to be in a town with an actual lumber store today. I have yet to build any lam bows and would like totry it out at some point soon. What types of wood should I be looking for as a beginner? The one that come to mind that I've seen used a lot would be hickory for backings, ipe for belly. Any other suggestions on what woods to keep an eye out for,  for either backs or bellies?   I was planning on using tb glue for the bows as I dont have any sort of heatbox type setup for the glues requiring that. Any advice would be much appreciated.

with a hickory backing I have had luck with maple/white oak/ash/jatoba/wenge/hickory/red oak/osage. Hickory backed maple is one of my favorite lumber bows and one of the cheapest.

White oak and massuranduba (bulletwood) are two more I have had success with.

I like hickory and massaranduba, you could also use ash as a backing. TB works fine for me and I dont use a heatbox

Yes, maple is a very overlooked wood in my opinion. :)

I used a white oak back with ipe, recently with good success, but haven't tried it on the bulletwood, yet...just hickory, so far.
