Yew Character Bow!
« on: November 25, 2012, 03:59:50 pm »
I just finished this one. I am new to Primitive Archer so please let me know if people want different or better pictures. This little one is 55" ntn 1 5/8" at the fades tapering to .5" at the nock. It pulls #50lbs at 26". I was not sure if this one would work, but it does and it has taken very little set. This was a tough tiller (look at that knot) I look forward to comments and suggestions.

Oh yeah, tough tiller indeed.  All I can say is...(wait for it)...better yew than me.

How about a picture of you with the bow at full draw?  More pictures of this bow won't offend me much!!!

Did you toast the belly?

Will do! Yes I heat treated it to help with set, I usually do on Locust, but had not tried it on Yew, works (at least for now).

Yew ain't so pretty, but that bow is inciting some mighty anti-10 Commandment sinfulness.  Particularly that one about not stealing.  Nice bow, mighty nice!

Thanks! I think it might have been impossible to get any weight with a perfect tiller. at least beyond my skill. with all the kinks and bends it is so hard to see the balance and curve. Any suggestions for something that is already bending in weird ways?

side unbraced. like I said it took a little set but the major kinks and deflex was in the stave, just a stick I found at my friends house!

Good job from a tricky stave.
If you want me to be really nit picking, Id say the stiff grip section could be a bit shorter and the outer thirds could bend a little more. That would spread the load over a longer working limb and help to minimise set.
But hey, what do I know, my last fell in half ;D.
There's penty of people who never could have got that stave to become a bow.

Pay no mind to this flock of stone-casting heathens. ;)  That is a pretty bow from a piece of wood most of us would have given away!   ;D

Nice work.  I like it!
