Scalloped Hickory Stave Bow
« on: November 24, 2012, 05:28:00 pm »
Hickory stave selfbow I made for my good friend Steve. Steve has been into traditional archery all his life and has me given multiple staves from all types of wood. This is a strectched out version of the bow on page 46 of Encyclopedia of Native Americans Bows Volume 1, attributed to the Seneca. Specs are 61" ntn, 57# @ 28"
Finish is something a little different in that it is multiple layers of glaze and dye to create a sort of wood grain pattern on the back and then the very edges of the limb are scraped back to exposed the sapwood. Zig zag design on edges of limbs on scalloped side are burned
in. Handle wrap is dyed deerskin and finish is spar varnish. Tiller is far from perfect but this bow is very smooth to draw, smooth to shoot,
whisper quiet and accurate in his hands Hope you enjoy the pics.
Greg

WOW.  AWESOME.  I love the handle.  I like the way you did the knocks.  The coloring on the back is really nice.  Tiller is excellent.  GOOD JOB!
Talking trees. What do trees have to talk about, hmm... except the consistency of squirrel droppings?

I like that one. Beautiful. The next scalloped bow from me shall be at least 67". I want a real target bow with 28" draw. Fantastic bow. :-)

Beautiful work Greg!  This was a completely different style than I expected.  Nice job.

B-2, Excellent bend on that bow....Ya had me at Eastern NA, but ya did her proud, for sure. I'm just curious what you think of the performance? I really like my short bendies for huntin.

Thanks M-P, appreciate it
Thanks Bowman, this one longer because my friend has a longer draw than me and he is mostly a target archer.
Paul, much thanks
Thank you dwardo, Slim and briarjumper, glad you guys liked it.
Rich, thank you. Done three like this so far so I'm no expert on this style yet but performance seems good to me and I really enjoy shooting this style. Want to do more of these and definitely want to start making them shorter, maybe 53" or 54" on the next one
when I have the right stave. Took my 57" bl scalloped hunting most of last year but the hunt gods were against me and no meat taken
with it. This year it became my #2 for hunting but will get out in the field before seasons end for another chance. Want to take a deer
with one of these scalloped bows real bad and I,m sure it will happen when the time is right. ;)
