Thanks for the good wishes and votes of confidence with the splice.
I've had a look at it and i think I can salvage it, I'll loose about 2-3".
Rather thn building up the back with leather under the grip I'll add a sliver of sapwood.
My guess is the splice was a bit too tight at the tip of the V and when i glued it I gave it a firm knock on the floor to seat it, maybe that just squeezed out the glue from the tip. The belly stayed glued, I think the break opened up from the tip of the V on the back, but it's hard to tell.
Nature has a way of cheering you up... I went back into my garage and there was a peackok butterfly fluttering about in there

They get in there to over winter.
I switched off the lights and came out to let it settle down
I hope that's a good omen... not that I'm soft enough to believe in such things
