My 2nd Bow - Hickory Mollegabet
« on: November 03, 2012, 03:04:58 am »
Well this is my second bow I've ever made, tried to go all out on it.  In the interim of making this one my 1st bow exploded but it was my own fault, the handle popped becasue I didn't fade it, and I just kept shooting, there was little I could do to repair it and BAM at full draw, quite a surprise!

Anyhow...

This bow I faded much better, has a almost center shot shelf, made from a board from Menards and a mystery wood for the handle and tips (If you know what it might be fill me in, it was in a reduced pile at my local Woodcraft store and is hard wood)

She pulls #54-53 at 28", has some set unfortunately and I think the tiller could be a bit better.

Finish is Tru-oil but I feels it's kind of soft so I might poly over it, right now it's very shiny.

Here are some pics...

Very nice!

Top limb has perfect tiller IMO, bottom maybe more bend in the middle and out.

Thats a fine looking bow good job  8) only your second too!
Set doesn't look bad at all from the photos. As above bottom limb could do with a bit more bend but hey it's a shooter!!

Congrats on getting a shooter, learn and understand shat you could've done better and apply it to the next, and then the next etc...

You get two thumbs up on the finish work and looks like ya spent some time finishing it up. I like bows that people give the proper attention to detail and finish work, and give them there due.

Cool bow.  One of my favorite bows is a hickory board.  Eastern woodland, heavily heat treated with pointy pencil tips and a tiny tied on string nocks.  Tips have an oval cross section blending into a rectangular.  Very simple, one of my first dependable bows, still one of my favorites to shoot.

Yeah I just wanted to get something I can shoot with.  Not a stranger with wood working, but first time with tru-oil.

Also any have any idea on what wood is in the handle, that is its natural color.

Nice bow tip to tip. Some extra time into that one paid off for ya.Looks like you've got some imagination to ya.That'll carry well for your future bows.

Yeah I wish I had noticed the bottom limb before I started finishing it, didn't really see it on the tree.  I'd like to make a twin to it and get it better.

Looks pretty good to me.  The tiller is real close, but if you want to touch it up a bit it's not too late.  Especially if you're thinking of putting some poly on it anyway.  All it would take is a few scrapes...
